In meeting the challenge of protecting children in an increasingly digital and online world, education is vital. From the outset, it is important not to forget that the internet affords tremendous potential for all, with many opportunities to discover, create and connect. However, all too often these great opportunities are also the source of hurt and harm for children and young people.

Whereas Eliot was writing the poetry of heaven, Stevens wrote the poetry of earth. He focused repeatedly on the imagination itself, and its vivid interactions with reality. “A poet’s subject is his sense of the world,” he once noted in an essay. For him, this world was the product of an ongoing “war between the mind / And sky, between thought and day and night,” as he wrote in “Notes Toward a Supreme Fiction”.

Because reading and learning must be every child’s right. Not just the privilege of a few.Hi guys! I write this sitting in my team hotel in Kochi after we bounced back in the One-day series with a win here. I just got off reading Hindustan Times newspaper on line which says that 6864 children are now going to school thanks to You Read They Learn project. Fantastic, isn’t it? And who knows what one of these kids may end up achieving tomorrow. I am a great believer in the line “you never know”.On Sunday we went on a team boat ride which was then followed by “city excursion” with a local friend. It was my opportunity to have a firsthand feel of the life here and also interact with the locals. I must say that you can make out the difference straight away. How literates in a society can makes things so much easier. It was amazing to see very little or no begging children on the traffic lights and mind you, we didn’t go to the posh areas. This is not to say that there would be no have-nots in this city but I am sure they are far less. One big reason is that in this coastal state of over 3 crore people the literacy rate is more than 93%. It is clear that education ensures that people find a way to their livelihoods. What is even better is to see is that Kerala’s female literacy is at an astounding 96.02% as per the 2011 census. In that regard it is clearly a model state and doesn’t surprise me that it is rated as the least corrupt state in the country and is also the cleanest. Come on guys there is a clear message: literacy can be one of the keys to our problems. Lets all get together and make HT’s You Read They Learn a grand success and give Kerala a run for the money in literacy rate.Personally, I’ll be working hard on both, spreading the YRTL message and also my batting! The Reggio Emilia approach is an educational philosophy focused on preschool and primary education, adopted by scores of preschools across the world. It was started by Loris Malaguzzi, who was a teacher himself, and the parents of the villages around the town of Reggio Emilia in Italy after World War II.At the heart of this philosophy is a powerful image of the child. Reggio educators do not see children as empty vessels that require filling with facts. Rather, they see children as full of potential, competent and capable of building their own theories. The approach credits children with inborn abilities and potential as well as strength and creativity. The fundamentals of the Reggio approachThe Reggio Emilia approach rests on 3 main pillars – parents, teachers and the environment.Parents are a vital component to the Reggio Emilia philosophy. The approach views parents as partners, collaborators and advocates for their children. Teachers respect parents as each child’s first teacher and involve parents in every aspect of the curriculum.A Reggio school not only has an open-to-parents approach, but parents are actually encouraged to participate in school activities. They can come to the school and tell a story, involve themselves in circle time, social time or even physical education time?? actually just about everything that a teacher does.In fact, most parents who choose to send their children to a Reggio Emilia programme incorporate many of the principles within their own parenting and even home life. The role of teachers in the Reggio approach is unique and rather unconventional. It is considered more like a co-learner and collaborator with the child and not just an instructor. Teachers are encouraged to facilitate the child’s learning by planning activities and lessons based on the child’s interests, asking questions to further understanding, and actively engaging in the activities alongside the child, instead of just sitting back and observing the child learning. This leads to Reggio schools having a low teacher student ratio?? sometimes as low as 10:1. Most Reggio schools do not encourage teachers’ chairs and desks to be any different from those of the students. Teachers become a part of all student activities, working along with the children. While working on projects with the child, the teacher also expands the child’s learning by collecting data such as photographs, notes, videos, and conversations that are reviewed at a later time. The Reggio teacher allows the children to:*Ask their own questions, and generate their own hypotheses and to test them.*To explore and generate many possibilities both affirming and contradictory. She welcomes contradictions as a venue for exploring, discussing and debating. To quote an example, when a child painted a black apple in class, instead of saying it was wrong, the teacher asked the student why. With his irrefutable logic, the boy said because he had eaten it at night! An interesting discussion followed this interaction!*She offers children, through the process of revisiting the opportunity to reorganize concepts, ideas, thoughts and theories to construct new meaning.*She is a keen observer, documenter, and partner in the learning process.A major teaching strategy is purposely to allow mistakes to happen, or to begin a project with no clear sense of where it might end.The environment as a third teacherThe surrounding physical environment is crucial to the Reggio Emilia’s early childhood programme, and is often referred to as the child’s “third teacher.”Reggio preschools are generally very spacious and awash with natural light. Classrooms open to a central gathering space and access to the outdoor is assured through doors in each classroom. There is abundant use of mirrors, photographs, and children’s work along with documentation of their discussions.Other supportive elements of the environment include clearly designated spaces for activities – there is a library corner, a pretend & play area, a space for group activities and so on. No classroom is set up with children on one side and the teacher on the other!Throughout the school, there is an effort to create opportunities for children to interact. Thus, the single dress-up area is in the central gathering space. Passageways or windows and bathrooms and play areas are designed to encourage community. The importance of documentationDocumentation is a key element in the Reggio Approach and allows the teacher to track what children are doing, learning and grasping. It is a reflection of interactions between teachers and children and among children. In a Reggio school, it is done on a daily basis.Documenting children’s daily experiences and ongoing projects gives meaning and identity to all that the children do. It is through the documentation that the teachers are able to gain insight into the thoughts of the children, create a history of the work and generate further interest.Reggio teachers are skilled observers of children. If a teacher observes closely she can see the intelligence on a child’s face. On a daily basis, they collect data via notes, recordings of conversations between children and through photographs and sometimes even video-taping of events and activities.Real life experiencesField trips are highly encouraged in a Reggio school. Children get an opportunity to have a first-hand look at their topic of interest. These experiences help the children and teachers to formulate questions and pose hypotheses and develop theories. For example, a visit to a bakery would result, among other things, in a conversation like this: “This is the oven that the baker uses. It is warm so that the cake that the baker has placed in it for you gets cooked properly.”From birth the child has the need and the right to communicate and interact with others. And the Reggio Emilia approach encourages children to do just that!WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and Ecuador’s president Rafael Correa have said that NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is ‘marooned’ in the Russian airport’s transit area due to his passport being revoked by the US authorities and Russia being indecisive about his fate.According to the Washington Post, Snowden appears to be stranded on the airport because of the legal limbo Russian and Ecuadorean authorities have been trapped into. Russia has claimed that since Snowden is practically not in the Russian territory as he is in the ‘transit area’ and his passport has been revoked, it cannot authorize his exit from the airport due to dire consequences as threatened by US.Meanwhile, Ecuador is keen to grant Snowden asylum only if he enters their region which is a thin possibility as an attempt in which he was issued ‘invalid and unauthorized travel documents’ were cancelled by Ecuador.Assange criticized US decision of revoking Snowden’s passport and said that taking passport from a young man in a difficult situation like that is a disgrace adding that this decision has left Snowden for the moment ‘marooned’ in Russia.Snowden has been charged with violation of the US’ Espionage Act because he was found to have leaked US led surveillance programme’s highly classified data about ‘citizen snooping’. In a bid to escape US extradition, Snowden had been in hiding in Hong Kong for a couple of weeks and later flew to Moscow in order to claim asylum in Ecuador.Meanwhile, Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro has praised Snowden for exposing the US ‘snooping programme’ and has said that the nation is more than willing to grant Snowden asylum only if a formal request is made adding that asylum is an international humanitarian right to protect those who are being pursued for noble causes.A spokeswoman for the Justice Department, Nanda Chitre said that US government is prepared to issue individuals wanted on felony charges a one-entry travel document to return home, which means that if once indicted, Snowden will be prosecuted, the report added.Former NSA contractor and whistleblower Edward Snowden is learnt to have landed in Moscow on Sunday but not before making more explosive claims about the extent of US’s surveillance and cyber espionage in China.Snowden has asked for asylum in Ecuador, its foreign minister said Sunday as the ex-NSA contractor seeks to escape US justice for revealing a vast phone and web snooping drive.Ecuador is led by President Rafael Correa, an outspoken leftist, populist and critic of the US in the mould of his late mentor Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. Ecuador has been sheltering WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at its London embassy for the past year.Meanwhile, in a statement released by state-run Xinhua news agency, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said, “We will continue to follow up on relevant development.”Hua said Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) was a society ruled by law. “In line with the Basic Law of Hong Kong SAR and the principle of ‘one country, two systems,’ the central government has always respected the Hong Kong SAR government in handling issues in accordance with the law,” she said.Late Sunday night, reports from Moscow said Snowden had landed in Russia.Earlier, the government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China confirmed that the US whistleblower Snowden had left the region for a third country.“The government has informed the US government of Snowden’s departure from Hong Kong,” the HKSAR statement, quoted by the state-run Xinhua news agency, said. But Snowden’s parting shot about US cyber espionage is likely to add to the damage to the US. Snowden told the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post that The Tsinghua University, regarded as among China’s top education institute, was the target of extensive hacking by the US hackers this year. At least 63 computers and servers in Tsinghua University were by the US’s National Security Agency (NSA) the report said.On Saturday, the US formally charged Snowden with espionage, theft of government data and conveying classified information to unauthorised persons. Following the latest round of claims by Snowden, China on Sunday again asked the US to explain the allegations.“These are clearly troubling signs. They demonstrate that the US, which has long been trying to play innocent as a victim of cyber-attacks, has turned out to be the biggest villain in our age,” an opinion piece on Xinhua said.Fugitive US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden on Friday told activists he wanted to claim asylum in Russia until he can travel on to Latin America, in his first encounter with the outside world since becoming marooned at a Moscow airport three weeks ago.The dramatic meeting at Sheremetyevo airport with rights groups and lawyers appeared an attempt by Snowden to find a way out of an increasingly difficult situation as he seeks to escape US espionage charges for leaking sensational details of widespread American surveillance activities.Snowden, 30, told a group of activists and lawyers from organisations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch that he had “no regrets” about his revelations.”That moral decision to tell the public about spying that affects all of us has been costly, but it was the right thing to do and I have no regrets,” Snowden said in a transcript released by the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks.Photographs posted on social media by participants showed Snowden dressed in a grey shirt and looking relaxed as he addressed the meeting. He was accompanied by Sarah Harrison, a British WikiLeaks employee who has been with him throughout his stay in Russia.Snowden, who has no official travel documents, said he needed asylum in Russia before he could work out a way to travel legally to Latin America.”I will be submitting my request to Russia today (Friday), and hope it will be accepted favourably,” he said.Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua have all indicated they would be open to offering Snowden a safe haven.”Some governments in Western European and North American states have demonstrated a willingness to act outside the law. This unlawful threat makes it impossible for me to travel to Latin America,” Snowden said.Bolivian President Evo Morales’s plane, flying home from a trip to Moscow, was diverted last week after several European nations closed their airspace to him over groundless rumours that Snowden was on board the jet.Snowden initially applied for asylum in 21 countries, most of which rejected the request, and then made applications to another six nations.Moscow said last week that Snowden had withdrawn his application for asylum in Russia after President Vladimir Putin said it was conditional on not damaging US interests. But the participants at the meeting said Snowden had now vowed not to harm the United States, although it was not clear if this meant he was prepared to agree to halt leaking new information about US surveillance activities.Snowden “promised that he would not act to harm the United States”, said lawyer Genri Reznik after attending the meeting.”He (Snowden) views the Russian president’s position with understanding,” said Reznik. “He understands that giving him political asylum will complicate ties between Russia and the US.”The Kremlin responded Snowden could stay in the country but repeated its condition.”Mr Snowden could hypothetically stay in Russia if he: first, completely stops the activities harming our American partners and US-Russian relations and second, if he asks for this himself,” Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in comments quoted by Russian news agencies. In a possible indication that Moscow is now more favourably disposed to Snowden, the powerful speaker of the Russian lower house of parliament, Sergei Naryshkin, told state television that Russia should grant Snowden asylum, describing him as a “defender of human rights”.Russian ruling party lawmaker Vyacheslav Nikonov who was present at the meeting said Snowden “was a bit jittery” but exuded confidence and a belief he “felt he was right”.”He was not making any jokes because he realises full well the seriousness of his situation,” Nikonov said.Snowden has made no public appearances since arriving at the state-controlled airport in the Russian capital on June 23. According to officials, he has spent the whole time in the airport transit zone but there has not been a single verifiable sighting of him until now.The US embassy in Moscow used Friday’s meeting to relay a message to Snowden warning him he should face justice at home, according to Human Rights Watch senior researcher Tanya Lokshina, who said she was asked by the embassy to transmit the message. The meeting with rights groups came after the United States on Thursday told China it was upset it did not hand over Snowden after he fled to Hong Kong, saying that the decision had undermined relations.President Barack Obama, meeting senior Chinese officials who were in Washington for annual talks, “expressed his disappointment and concern” over the Snowden case, the White House said. The father of US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden, frustrated by his inability to reach out directly to his son, wrote him an open letter on Tuesday praising him for “summoning the American people to confront the growing danger of tyranny.”The letter was signed by Lon Snowden and his lawyer, Bruce Fein, who also reported receiving a phone call from WikiLeaks founder and publisher Julian Assange. The comes a day after Edward Snowden issued a statement through WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy website, criticizing the Obama administration for leaving him “stateless” and revoking his passport. Snowden is in Russia and has been seeking asylum in multiple countries. He has not been seen publicly in more than a week after arriving at a Russian airport from Hong Kong, where he had been in hiding. The disclosures by the former national Security Agency systems analyst of US government surveillance programs have restarted a national debate over security and privacy. And in a phone interview Tuesday, Fein said he received a call Saturday from Assange, who purported to deliver a message from son to father asking that elder Snowden keep quiet. The call came after Lon Snowden told NBC that his son had technically broken the law but was not a traitor and was motivated by legitimate concerns about the surveillance programs. He also expressed frustration that WikiLeaks may not be giving his son the best advice. The organization has been helping Snowden apply for asylum in a variety of countries including Venezuela, Bolivia and 18 other countries, according to WikiLeaks, Fein said he is continuing to work to establish a direct link between father and son that does not require WikiLeaks as an intermediary. The new letter tells Edward Snowden that “(w)hat you have done and are doing has awakened congressional oversight of the intelligence community from deep slumber” and “forced onto the national agenda the question of Whether the American people prefer the right to be left alone from government snooping absent probable cause. … You are a modern day Paul Revere: summoning the American people to confront the growing danger of tyranny and one branch government.”Lon Snowden and Fein have been trying to arrange for the younger Snowden to be able to return to the US under circumstances that they believe would guarantee fair treatment and a fair trial, including a promise that he would not be detained prior to trial and would not be subject to a gag order. The letter Tuesday also said, “Irrespective of life’s vicissitudes, we will be Unflagging in efforts to educate the American people about the impending ruination of the Constitution and the rule of law unless they abandon their complacency or indifference. Your actions are making our challenge easier.”We encourage you to engage us in regular exchanges of ideas or thoughts about approaches to curing or mitigating the hugely suboptimal political culture of the United States. Nothing less is required to pay homage to Valley Forge, Cemetery Ridge, Omaha Beach, and other places of great sacrifice.”Fein said he hopes the letter can help focus the public on the debate that Snowden initially hoped to foster when he leaked details about the surveillance programs. That debate, over the proper role of surveillance in US society, “is being obscured by the debate on where to seek asylum.”Chief secretary R Parasuram, while addressing a meeting of officials of the Ujjain division in Ratlam on Wednesday, said effective strategy is a must for concretising concept of good governance. Even daily consumption of one egg may increase good cholesterol, ie HDL level. In fact, the fat found in eggs is mostly unsaturated fat, which is the ‘healthy fat’. Moreover, eggs do not contain any trans fat, which is a known trigger for increased incidence of heart disease,” explains Dr Bhamri.MondayFrittata (Italian Omelette)IngredientsOne big onion (diced), 1 small zucchini, 1 each bellpepper (red, green and yellow), 1/2 cup mushroom, a few fresh spinach leaves, 4 eggs, 2 tbsp double cream, 1/4 cup parmesan cheese (grated), 1 tbsp olive oil, salt and pepper to tasteMethodBreak the eggs in a mixing bowl. So we should engage with the new de facto power,” he wrote.”In that way, we can also help shape a path back to the ballot box that is designed by and for Egyptians.”Likewise, Blair argued that Western nations have a responsibility to work towards peace in the wider Middle East.”We feel it should be someone else’s job to help sort it out. But it is our job,” he wrote.Egyptian authorities announced Tuesday that the restoration of several pieces from the funerary regalia of the pharaoh Tutenkhamen, who reigned between 1332-1323 B.C., has been completed.According to a note from the Ministry of State for Antiquities, the pieces were restored at the Grand Egyptian Museum, which is under construction near the pyramids of Giza. The museum, whose inauguration is scheduled for 2015, will exhibit all the antiquities associated with the ruler known as the boy king because he died so young. This year marks the 9th anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb by British archaeologist Howard Carter, an event that sparked a passion for Egyptology.Tutankhamen is the only pharaoh whose tomb was practically intact at the time of its discovery. The treasures of his funerary chamber can now be seen at the Egyptian Museum in downtown Cairo, and will occupy 30 percent of the new Grand Egyptian Museum.Egypt’s interim president selected a team of legal experts Saturday, to rewrite controversial portions of the Islamist-drafted constitution, as the military-backed leadership moved quickly to try to capitalize on the coup that ousted the country’s first freely elected leader. While supporters of former president Mohammed Morsi still protest in the streets, Egypt’s new prime minister called for consensus and participation of all political groups. But Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood group officially has refused to negotiate with the new government, saying they are open for talks only after he is reinstated. The persistent protest and clashes, however, continue to rock hope for stability in the country.Moves to amend the constitution are the latest push by the country’s new leadership to move ahead with a military-backed timetable for a return to democratic rule to Egypt. The drafting of Egypt’s constitution was one of the most divisive issues that came to characterize Morsi’s first and only year in office. In his decree Saturday, interim president Adly Mansour appointed the 10-member committee of judges and law professors that will propose amendments to the constitution. They have 30 days to suggest amendments. A second committee, comprised of 50 public figures including politicians, unionists and religious figures, then will have 60 days to review those amendments. After that, citizens will vote on the proposed amendments in a referendum, according to the military-backed timetable. Parliamentary elections are to follow. In an interview with Egyptian state television aired Saturday night, prime minister Hazem el-Beblawi said it is vital that Islamists take part in the political process, though none of Morsi’s supporters are in the new Cabinet he leads.”We cannot write a constitution when the country is divided. The country needs consensus,” he said. “It is important we return to a country of laws.”The Brotherhood say the only legitimate constitution is the one approved in a nationwide vote and ratified by Morsi in December. The military suspended the constitution after the July 3 coup.El-Beblawi also denied that the country’s army chief, Abdel-Fatah el-Sissi, was pulling the strings from behind the scenes, saying he only spoke to the interim president regarding the formation of Cabinet.Liberals twice walked out of committees drafting the constitution under Morsi, complaining that the Brotherhood and its allies dominated the process and stifled their suggestions.Protests over the constitution and the direction of the country turned deadly after Morsi issued temporary decrees in late November that put himself and the drafting committee above judicial oversight. The charter was then finalized in a rushed overnight session and passed in a referendum.Unlike the previous drafting committee under Morsi, at least 20 percent of the second committee is to be represented by young Egyptians who helped galvanize street movements and women.Mohammed Abdel-Aziz, a leading figure in the Tamarod petition drive that mobilized the massive street protests that led to Morsi’s ouster, said his group has launched a new initiative to collect suggestions from Egyptians on the constitution.”We want to reach a constitution that is representative of the people’s will,” Abdel-Aziz told The Associated Press. He declined to comment on which articles the group wants amended.Meanwhile Saturday, a security official said unidentified assailants threw a bomb at a police station in the governorate of Ismailiya, between Cairo and the volatile northern region of the Sinai Peninsula. Part of the building and a police vehicle were damaged, but no injuries were reported, the official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to journalists.Clashes between protesters and security forces have erupted into violence several times since Morsi’s ouster, killing more than 60 people. The most recent incident occurred Friday night in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura when unidentified assailants opened fire at a Brotherhood-led march, sparking a melee that killed three female protesters, authorities said. The Brotherhood said two were killed by gunshot and one died after suffocating on tear gas. Medical officials said the protesters’ bodies were examined Saturday. The prime minister and Vice President Mohammed ElBaradei condemned the incident in separate posts on Twitter.A road accident killed 17 soldiers and injured more than 30 others in Egypt’s Nile Delta province of Beheira on Sunday, a security source said. Their bus collided with a lorry on a highway, the source said. Seven of those killed were officers. An initial toll had said the crash killed 15 soldiers but two others died in hospital of their injuries. The bus had been travelling on the El-Alamein highway when the accident took place. The lorry driver survived the crash. After the accident, the army sent a plane to transport the victims to a military hospital. Bad driving and lax enforcement of traffic regulations are often blamed for the high frequency of road accidents in Egypt. However, Egyptians have also long complained that the government has failed to deal with chronic transport problems, with both roads and train lines poorly maintained. Two days after four tribal girls were dragged out of a hostel in Jharkhand and gang raped by a group of armed men, eight were arrested for the crime. The girls, all 12 to 14-year-olds, were students of a missionary institute in the Maoist-hit Pakur district.Announcing the arrests on Tuesday, new Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren said the ninth man would be caught by Wednesday. The hostel, located in Pakur’s Lamda village, had no security. The 20-strong group had struck late on Sunday night and carried off the girls to a nearby forest. While nine of them raped the girls for around two hours, the others guarded the institute’s gates so no one could come to the rescue of the victims.”A special policy ensuring the security of schools and institutions located in rural areas is being planned,” Soren said. The government, he added, would bear the costs of the treatment and education of the girls, who belong to the Paharia primitive tribal group.A dispute over a cricket match led to a clash between two groups of a minority community on Tuesday morning causing injuries to at least eight persons in a Kakori village on the city outskirts. The two groups attacked each other with rods, canes, and sharp edged weapons and even pelted each other with stones. The injured have been admitted in Balrampur hospital where condition of two persons was said to be critical. The incident led to tension in the village and heavy police force was deployed to avert any further clash. The police have detained some local youths allegedly involved in the incident after registering FIR.According to reports, the two groups clashed over a twoday old dispute when they had scuffled while playing cricket in Chandoiya village of Kakori. The two groups entered into the verbal duel again on Tuesday morning and soon turned violent.Eight of the 12 people killed in the twin bomb blasts in Hyderabad on Thursday evening have been identified, police said. They are Mohd Rafeeq (22), Ijaz Ahmed (first-year student of polytechnic college), Vijay Kumar (23, MBA student), Mutyala Raju (23, MBA student), A Ramulu (56), R Shivani, Gunta Thirupathi and Srinivas Reddy. The remaining bodies at government-run Osmania Hospital are yet to be identified. The list of injured released by the office of Cyberabad police commissioner in the early hours of Friday shows 121 people were admitted to seven hospitals in the city.Thirty injured were undergoing treatment at Osmania Hospital and 26 at Care Hospital.Another 26 were admitted to Omni Hospital, 18 to Yashoda Hospital and 11 to Kamla Hospital. Police has been informed about the clash. A case will be registered, the official added.Karan Johar points out the eight things you need to do to become a modern-day movie star I believe that we have a special industry and that our films are unique. They have an ethos that’s different from the rest of the world cinema. So the qualities that go into the making of a mainstream Bollywood star are different from the attributes required from a movie star at the global level. The eight qualities addressed here will be applicable, strictly to Bollywood.1. To start with, the most important thing is to love Hindi cinema. You have to love everything about it ? the song and dance, the hero, the typical hero-wali entry or the heroine’s nakhra. You have to love all these things which stand for mainstream Hindi cinema. Whoever has done well in our industry in the past has had tremendous affection these elements.2. You will also need a good combination of sincerity, commitment and hard work in abundance. This could hold true for other industries too; but in Bollywood especially, you need to fight your own battles. In their absence, you won’t be able to ‘walk tall’ in movies.3. You should be able to make a fool of yourself! Yes, sometimes, you should be able to do things that otherwise you can’t think of doing on a regular day. I come across some young actors who don’t have the ability to laugh at themselves. Get out of your comfort zone and do things that don’t necessarily come out of your body organically.4. Take chances and go against the norm. There’s no textbook of what’s wrong or right in the industry. You have to use your instinct and blend it with the inherent sense of making the right choices. The prime example is Ranbir Kapoor, who has always gone ahead with abstract choices. That is what, I feel, defines his stardom. You should do what comes naturally to you.5. Of course, there’s always destiny. So the right chances plus luck equals success. Destiny plays a large part in modelling a star’s career.6. A star must always be versatile. If you want to be an all-rounder, then you must be able to sing and dance and look good too. Don’t forget, being an all-rounder will make you a national-level heartthrob. You can’t say I am an actor so I won’t dance or I won’t work on my physique. You have to be fit and look good. You can’t be condescending about it.7. Learn to tackle the media. You need to realise that it is an existing platform that must be leveraged intelligently. It’s no longer cool to be media-unfriendly. You can no longer say that you don’t need the media because the truth is that you do. And at the same time, exercise restraint in terms of appearances. Dealing with the media intelligently is a crucial part of being a star.8. Finally, the last and probably the most important thing is to have that X-factor. Over and above everything else, you just can’t plan this factor. It’s an element that can break the clutter and establish the feeling that there’s something that only you can do and no one else. It’s the only quality that you can’t work towards. You either have it or don’t, simple. Audiences will decide on it.Gravity has taken hold of Apple, and a lot of investors have been smacked on the head.Apple Inc, the largest US stock by market value, was headed toward its eighth straight week of declines on Friday, as the rush to secure profits before a potential hike in capital gains taxes next year has investors dumping the market favorite.Since hitting a record high of $705.07 a share in September, Apple has lost about a quarter of its value. The stock’s descent has vastly outpaced those of the S&P 500, which is down just under 7% in the same time frame.”No individual investment can defy gravity,” said Erik Davidson, deputy chief investment officer for Wells Fargo Private Bank, in San Francisco. The declines have shaved about $170 billion off the company’s market capitalization — or just a bit more than the entire value of Coca-Cola. Apple is still currently worth about $493 billion, about $100 billion more than the second-most valuable US company, Exxon Mobil.Apple on Friday afternoon was little changed, up 0.2% at $526.59.Taxes on capital gains and dividends are likely to rise next year as part of an expected deficit-cutting deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff of scheduled tax hikes and spending cuts. With a stock like Apple, where investors may have large embedded capital gains as a result of its stellar run, selling now locks in gains and offsets the possibility of higher taxes next year. The uncertainty over the outcome of talks in Washington over the fiscal cliff has sapped the natural inclination to buy declining shares.”Some of the selling is being driven by these tax decisions, but the flip side is there is not a lot of buyers because the buyers are procrastinating to see how the negotiations come out,” said Bucky Hellwig, senior vice president at BB&T Wealth Management in Birmingham, Alabama. “You probably have an inordinate effect to the downside because of these tax strategies.”The current 15% tax rate on dividends and capital gains is scheduled to expire at year end, and the two items are to revert back to being taxed as ordinary income, which means the highest earners would face rates of 35%.The recent plunge is a reversal of fortune for high-flying Apple, those though the shares remain up about 30% for the year so far. Apple shares have rise every year since 2003 with the exception of 2008, when the market was struck by the global financial crisis.”If you’ve got all these gains – which a lot of Apple investors have because it’s done very, very well – then you’re going to see selling in the likes of Apple and other companies that have had good runs,” Davidson said.Apple’s stock has been below both its 14-day and 50-day moving average for over a month, suggesting both the short- and mid-term momentum is negative.Despite the declines, Thomson Reuters StarMine estimates the stock’s intrinsic value is about $833.90 a share. That figure is derived from analyst estimates for growth over the next five years and StarMine’s expected growth rates for several years after that.Given that the stock is likely worth more than where it is trading, tax concerns are probably playing into the recent weakness, said Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors, in New York.”I think the stock is worth $750,” said Orlando.”If you are sitting here looking at Apple trading at $500, you say, ‘Well the stock ought to be 50% higher over the course of the next year or two,’ so the stock looks pretty attractive.”Physicist Albert Einstein’s brain, though of average size, contained an unusually high number of folds which may have provided the genius with the ability to think in “extraordinary ways”, scientists claim. The Nobel Prize-winning scientist’s brain was divided into 240 blocks and distributed to researchers after his death in 1955. Most of the specimens were lost and little was written about its anatomy.Scientists now have used photographs of the brain before it was segmented to produce a “road map” connecting the 240 sections and the 2,000 thin slivers into which they were later split, ‘The Telegraph’ reported. The pictures, taken from the private collection of pathologist Thomas Harvey, who divided the brain up, show a number of peculiarities about Einstein’s brain.Although Einstein’s brain was only of average size, weighing 1,230 grams, certain areas contain an unusually high number of folds and grooves, a comparison with 85 other brains showed.Anthropologist Dean Falk of Florida State University found “regions that are exceptionally complicated in their convolutions” in each of Einstein’s brain lobes. The finding confirmed reports in two previous studies, which suggested that an unusual pattern of ridges in the brain could have been linked to Einstein’s remarkable ability to solve problems in physics, the report said.Falk and colleagues, writing in the journal ‘Brain’, also observed that Einstein’s brain was enlarged in regions which transmit nerve impulses to the face and tongue, and in the prefrontal cortex, which is linked to concentration and forward planning. The extra matter in areas linked to the face and tongue could explain a comment by the scientist that his thinking was “muscular” rather than taking the form of words, researchers said, adding “it may be that he used his motor cortex in extraordinary ways”.Researchers were also able to map out the 240 brain sections in the hope that other scientists could use them for future projects. Einstein died on 18 April 1955 aged 76 in New Jersey, United States.’A team at Tel Aviv University and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics has discovered an exoplanet using a new method that relies on Einstein’s special theory of relativity. The method looks for three small effects that occur simultaneously as a planet orbits the star. Einstein’s “beaming” effect causes the star to brighten as it moves toward us, tugged by the planet, and dim as it moves away. “This is the first time that this aspect has been used to discover a planet,” said co-author Tsevi Mazeh of Tel Aviv University.Albert Einstein passes the test of spacetime! The study of a bizarre binary star system nearly 7,000 light-years from Earth shows that Einstein’s theory of general relativity holds true even when tested in the most extreme conditions, astronomers claim.A newly-discovered pulsar, a spinning neutron star with twice the mass of the Sun ? and its white-dwarf companion, orbiting each other once every two and a half hours, has put gravitational theories to the most extreme test yet.At some point, scientists expect Einstein’s theory on General Relativity, published in 1915, to be invalid under extreme conditions.Physicists hope to find an alternate description of gravity that would eliminate that incompatibility.Observations of the system, dubbed PSR J0348+0432, produced results consistent with the predictions of General Relativity, researchers said. The tightly-orbiting pair was discovered with the National Science Foundation’s Green Bank Telescope (GBT), and subsequently studied in visible light with different telescopes. In such a system, the orbits decay and gravitational waves are emitted, carrying energy from the system. By very precisely measuring the time of arrival of the pulsar’s radio pulses over a long period of time, astronomers can determine the rate of decay and the amountof gravitational radiation emitted. In Hollywood, ‘director’s cut’ isn’t an alien term. And now, Gautham Menon’s Ekk Deewana Tha is set to experiment with the concept in India too.The Prateik-Amy Jackson starrer will release today with two different versions ? the director’s cut, which will be released in select theatres in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru, and the popular choice cut. And the audience can choose which one they prefer. Interestingly, the two versions will feature different climaxes.“Gautham has kept all the details under wraps. The highlight of the director’s cut is very quirky, but while filming it, he fell in love with the ending and wanted it to be retained. And since not everyone agreed, we decided to come out with two versions of the climax scene,” says a source close to the film. Ekk Deewana Tha is a remake of Gautham’s Tamil film, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010). He also remade it in Telugu as Ye Maaya Chesave in 2010.When contacted, Gautham says with a smile: “For me, this film is really special. I have thought of a new ending every time I have re-directed it. I have had to think differently for each audience while working on the same story. The Tamil audience is more receptive to unusual endings.”The trend of releasing director’s cuts was first introduced in the early 1980s in Hollywood, alongside the rise of the home video industry. Two of the first films to be re-released with these versions were Michael Cimino’s hit Heaven’s Gate (1980) and Ridley Scott’s Harrison Ford-starrer Blade Runner (1982).A director’s cut is……a specially edited version of the film that is supposed to represent the director’s own approved edit. Market demands and limitations imposed on filmmakers by the production studio play a part in dictating the final version of the film. ‘Cut’ refers to the process of film editing, while popular choice refers to the version of the film that enjoys a wider release.Kareena-Imran’s coming-of-age romcom Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu has collected approx Rs. 21.25 cr nett in its opening weekend, say trade experts.”Picked up after a slow start on Friday and showed ample growth on Saturday and Sunday. Is extra-ordinary at urban centres, while circuits dominated by single screens remained lackluster.” writes Taran Adarsh for Bollywood Hungama.”Has performed the best at plexes of Mumbai, Delhi, Punjab, Kolkata and Mysore, which have contributed to a big chunk of the business, but in circuits like C.P., C.I. and Rajasthan, the growth in business remained minimal,” added Adarsh.”#EkMainAurEkkTu collected approx Rs. 21.25 cr nett in its opening weekend. Breakup:- Fri 5.25 cr, Sat 7.5 cr, Sun [early est] 8.5 cr,” he tweeted.”Compared to the start, the pick up on Saturday and Sunday is quite good. The target audience of the film (the multiplex frequenting audience) seems to have taken to the film, although from a day later,” wrote Komal Nahta for koimoi.com”This takes the first weekend total of the Imran Khan-Kareena Kapoor starrer to Rs. 21 crore (approx. all-India net),” he added.Excited Karan Johar shared on Twitter, “Its been a gruelling time at DHARMA…2 back to back releases have definitely taken its toll on everyone!!! But 2day it all seems worth it!! Am thrilled with the box office performance and the glowing reviews of #EMAET!!! @shakunbatra is the man of the moment!!!”Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger continues to weave magic at the box office as it amasses Rs. 20 crore on Eid. The film has broken a series of records. It is not only the biggest first day opener, it also went on to break the first weekend record.”#EkThaTiger – India *actuals* Monday [Eid] 20.68 cr. Total:120.84 cr nett. NEW RECORD FOR MONDAY FIGURES,” tweets trade analyst Taran Adarsh.”The movie it seems is on a record breaking spree. Firstly, the highest 1st day collection, then the highest on any given day by a movie, then the fastest 100 Crore and now a record breaking Monday, Ek Tha Tiger is indeed on fire. Collections will drop on Tuesday, however the movie has more than just created history. The drop really won’t matter to Salman Khan as the coming weekend will rejuvenate the movie yet again,” reports Koimoi.com.The 100 crore feat”#EkThaTiger – India *actuals* Sun 23.06 cr. Total: 100.16 cr nett. SUPERB. Fastest 100 cr grosser ever – 5 days [Hindi films]. NEW RECORD!” tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh. Salmanand Katrina”#EkThaTiger is @BeingSalmanKhan ’s 4th century [100 cr], the other three being #Dabangg [147 cr], #Ready [122 cr] and #Bodyguard [148 cr],” added Adarsh.”Ek Tha Tiger reaches 100-cr mark in 5 days – another Rs. 25 cr from overseas. Total Rs. 125 cr. Today’s Eid collection remains to be counted,” tweeted ABP News. The film had reached Rs. 77.10 cr mark on Saturday. “#EkThaTiger – India *actuals* Sat 16.75 cr. Total: 77.10 cr nett. Excellent growth on Saturday,” Adarsh had tweeted.First Weekend”Ek Tha Tiger made an approx 11.75 Crores on it’s 1st Friday at the box office. After opening to a humongous 32.92 Crores and grossing 14.55 Crores on it’s 2nd Day, Ek Tha Tiger looks pretty steady with 59.22 Crores in it’s pocket,” reports Koimoi.com. “The movie might have seen a steady fall in its last two days but one can surely account that to working days not being huge grossing days. However, Ek Tha Tiger has created a new record at the Indian Box Office. In its 1st weekend (i.e. 1st 3 days run) it has grossed about 59 crores which is the highest ever in Indian history. Post Monday, when the fasting season of Ramadan gets over, there is no saying what collections will the movie make,” adds the website.2nd day collections”After shattering every record possible to shreds Ek Tha Tiger moved to its 2nd day. As per early estimates the movie would have made 16 crores on it’s Day 2 at the Indian Box Office. Ek Tha Tiger had grossed a humongous 32.92 crores on its Day 1 and its total box office collections till date stands at 48.92 crores,” reported Koimoi.com.”The fall was quite expected as Thursday was a working day and not a holiday unlike Wednesday. However, the movie is expected to hit the chords again this weekend. There is no doubt that Ek Tha Tiger will prove to be an all time blockbuster at the box office if it sustains its momentum even for a weekend,” added

Israel, along with much of the international community, believes that Iran is trying to develop a nuclear weapon. The Israelis fear a nuclear Iran would threaten its existence, given repeated Iranian calls for the destruction of the Jewish state, and have threatened to attack Iran if diplomacy and sanctions fail. A new round of talks between the West and Iran are set to begin this week in Turkey.

I ask him if he’s formed a view on independence yet. “I have a high respect for Alex Salmond I think he might be the best politician in Britain today. The independence thing is a different question because I’m not living here and I therefore can’t understand it to its fullest extent. And I don’t vote. As a young sportsperson, you start making quite a bit of money, you get approaches from all the political parties for support, so I made a decision I would never make a contribution to a political party and, if I didn’t do that, I shouldn’t vote.”

But attention didn’t necessarily make a magazine successful, and The Alternative was chronically low on money. At first Tyrrell, Von Kannon, and Burr got along with cash from a few local supporters and the national conservative group . But early on, facing the immediate prospect of going broke, Tyrrell asked the widow of the pharmaceutical magnate Eli Lilly for a contribution. She sent $3,000 and offered to give much more if the magazine could be set up as a charitable foundation, which would make her contributions tax-deductible. On her advice Tyrrell incorporated The Alternative as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charity, which the magazine remained until Gilder bought it, more than thirty years later. For all those years individual contributions to The Alternative and, later, to The American Spectator were fully tax-deductible. (Although it seems a peculiarity of the tax code that a political magazine could qualify as a charity, the liberal American Prospect and Mother Jones both have 501(c)(3) status.)

Her voice faded, and he felt himself swept up as if rising toward the ceiling. Air washed lightly in and out of his lungs; warmth pulsed in the hands that held his. In his mind he saw a sea emerging from fog. The water was broad and flat and glittered like polished metal. He could feel dune grass moving against his shins, and wind coming over his shoulders. All around him bees shuttled over the dunes. Far out a shorebird was diving for crabs. He knew that a few hundred yards away two girls were building castles in the sand; he could hear their song, soft and lilting. Their mother was with them, reclining under an umbrella, one leg bent, the other straight. She was drinking iced tea, and he could taste it in his mouth, sweet and bitter with a trace of mint. Each cell in his body seemed to breathe. He became the girls, the diving bird, the shuttling bees; he was the mother of the girls and the father; he could feel himself flowing outward, richly dissolving, paddling into the world like the very first cell into the great blue sea …
