It also has to do with lower expectations, said Amit Khurana, director – research at Dolat Capital Market. “Analysts had no major expectation from companies this quarter and to that extent, the estimates were quite conservative. These are early days, but most of the companies we track have sustained operating margins,” he said.

From a pure footballing perspective, there is a persuasive argument to pursuing a Welshman. Barring an overhaul of the Uefa co-efficients or Chris Coleman overturning the qualifying odds, Bale is unlikely to feature in a summer tournament, although involvement in an expanded Euro 2016 is possible. Otherwise Bale will continue to rest in the summer. It’s hammock time. Bale will start more seasons fresher than Walcott. All that will be forgotten today as two old friends are foes for 90 minutes.Ballboys at all England’s professional clubs are being told to avoid time-wasting or other “inappropriate behaviour” by the Football Association as a result of the Eden Hazard affair, which resulted in the Chelsea midfielder being charged with misconduct yesterday (Friday).

While visitors seek out even more art at Pitti Palace and explore the vast Boboli Gardens, the quieter and more rewarding walk is along the river with a climb up to the church of San Miniato and Piazzale Michelangelo. This is the place to enjoy the most breathtaking views of Florence and the peaceful Tuscan hills beyond.Moments after winning the inaugural Indian Grand Prix, double world champion driver Sebastian Vettel described his performance as “fantastic” and said he is very happy to win the first ever Formula One race hosted by this country.”Today is a fantastic performance – It is great to be winning the first ever Grand Prix of India. To put this arena so well is fantastic. Whole in one it is fantastic. I want to thank everyone for our win,” said Vettel who registered his 11th triumph of the season today.Vettel paid tribute to MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli and IndyCar racer Dan Wheldon, who succumbed to fatal crashes recently while racing in different circuits.”We pray that every time nothing happens as Marco Simoncelli and Dan Wheldon disappeared last week-end and we will never forget these young committed two drivers,” he said. The Red Bull driver said his team is still hungry to win and he is looking forward to races at Abu Dhabi and Brazil.”The car is fantastic. The team is enjoying the performance. When I walk in the garage, I see that the guys are working very hard. We are still hungry. It is a fantastic achievement. I am looking at the two next races,” said Vettel, who will next bid to equal Michael Schumacher’s 13 F1 win record in a season. The 24-year-old said the circuit was challenging and a good start was very important.”It is very challenging. It is very easy to go over the limit and to end up in the dust. Then you have to fight your way back. It is not so easy with traffic,” he said.”The start was important. I was focusing a lot on turn 3. It was crucial to have a clean exit. I was able to pull away in the first laps. Jenson pitted. We had to react. The second sting was more tricky to manage.”The tires were a bit of an issue. But I found the rhythm again. After Jenson pitted, we reacted the lap after. Then I was able to push. We wanted to have Jenson in the mirrors and that is where we kept him,” he added. Vettel said a new track poses many questions but now that they have the experience of racing here, they would have more data for next year.”It is always clear than when there is a new track there are many questions to answer. Like tire choice. We knew about the soft tires. We were not sure if we had to pit twice or three times. These days we get an idea about the track. It is different when it is new,” he said.”We have more data for next year and we can understand more for the car and for the setup. It is more difficult for strategy, set-up when the track is new. As of now, our life will be a lot easier.”McLaren Mercedes driver Jenson Button, who finished second at the podium, said it was a fantastic race and dedicated it to Marco and Dan.”I am fantastically happy. I got a good start and then I was trying to match Sebastian’s pace. Yesterday I had a disaster in qualifying but it was a good race,” he said.”It was a tough week-end last week with two fatalities. I knew Dan very well. It is a very sad race. I think we should dedicate this race to Marco and Dan.”The 31-year-old British said he lacked pace to catch up with Vettel but overall it was a good race.”I had Mark behind me. I was able to pull away. It was a fun race. We did a good job. The pace is not quite there. But we will make up,” he said.”The race was very different. I had a good start and then it was about judging where to put the car on turn 3. You have to be very careful where to put the car on turn 3. Mark pushed me very hard. We had a go on turn 4. In the end it was tricky.”The guys on the team did a tremendous pit-stop. The pace was good. But when Sebastian was in the rhythm, we could not touche him. We did not have the pace.”I hope that Sebastian is not untouchable. He is difficult to challenge. We tried everything today. But Sebastian and Red Bull were untouchable. We hope we can challenge him,” he added.Button also congratulated his team and said they will push hard for a strong finish in the next two races.”I want to congratulate the team for winning the second place for constructor. This means we are strong for the next two races. I am very excited with the challenge from Abu Dhabi and Brazil,” he said.Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso too was pleased to finish third but rued their complicated start at the Budd International circuit today.”I am very pleased with this podium. It is fantastic to be on the podium on occasion of a first ever Grand Prix. As for us at Ferrari, we did not make the perfect start. We lost a few positions,” he said.”The second pit-stop was a bit complicated as we did two extra laps. The hard tires were not as good as the stops. The team did the right call. We were calm and we tried to take the advantage from the extra two laps.”In the last stint it was a bit of a question mark. Even if we were third at that point of the race, we were not sure how it would go. If more laps, the podium would have been more difficult,” he reckoned.Talking about the recent deaths of Marco and Dan, the 30-year-old Spanish said, “Mixed Feelings after sad days for motor-sports with two fatalities and we will remember these two fantastic friends.”Alonso also had good things to say about the circuit.”The circuit was fantastic for 60 laps. It is very nice to drive. It was a narrow line from normal line. It will improve. The circuit has a bit of everything: Hairpin, good start,” he said.”Two DRS zone which worked ok with more overtaking possibilities and a good combination of corners in 5th and 6th gear which we love to drive.”The circuit itself will improve too. There was too much sand the first day. Now the circuit is in a very good conditions. There were a bit of issued on the kerb with my team-mate, there will be a better solution on this subject to avoid any risk or any accident,” he added.Although two more races are still to go, both drivers and constructor champions have been decided and Alonso said his priority would be to focus on 2012.”Two races left and 13 points away from Jenson. There are 50 points still available in the last two races of the season. Finishing second is better than fifth. But it is not a big priority for us to get a better position in the championship.”This season, I will remember my win in Silverstone or a few great podiums. But once the championship is not in our hand, what can we do? The team worked well on my car. My priority will be 2012,” he signed off.The 44 barrels situated at the culmination points of 44 huge nullahs at Gomti play an important role in warding off waterlogging in the city. These barrels stop the river water from entering the city and inject city water ( nullah flow ) into the river during heavy rain. Out of these 44 barrels, 14 are run by diesel. The rest are run by power and in case of power cuts, by generators.Gomti flow remains sluggish throughout the year, except during the monsoon when heavy rainfall causes increase in the runoff. When Gomti overflows, the water starts entering inside the city through these huge nullahs but gates of these barrels stop rain water from entering the city. Nullah water is pumped out into the river through huge pumps. Corporator of Subhash Chandra Bose ward Sayyed Yawar Hussain Reshu says, “The LMC administration focuses on cleaning nullahs but neglects other equally critical issues like testing of barrel pumps before the onset of the monsoon. At many barrels, one cannot find the operators. They leave the pumps abandoned. At some places, there is no diesel to run the pumps and at others, the pump does not performing to full capacity.”“It is a shame that in a city like Lucknow, where civic administrators do not plan properly, the irrigation department, LMC, LDA, Jal Nigam and Jal Sansthan all work in their own style, due to lack of coordination between all these civic departments. Needless to state, the worst sufferer is the public which is forced to stay indoors during the rainy season,” said Reshu. The barrels are very important for saving the city from large scale waterlogging like the one witnessed in 2006 and 2007 when the entire trans- Gomti area and cattle colony were submerged under knee-deep water. Last year too trans-Gomti areas of Jankipuram , Jankipuram extension and Aliganj were inundated. This man is possibly one of the most versatile and talented members of the Hindi film industry. While most actors venture later into producing and directing films, Farhan Akhtar is one of the few stars with a reverse career graph! He started out with directing one of the most memorable feel-good films – Dil Chahta Hai, went on to singing songs in his film debut and to playing deep and disturbed protagonists. Now, Farhan Akhtar has a rather varied filmography to his credit.Born to the illustrious and renowned couple Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani, Farhan Akhtar, whose twin sister is filmmaker Zoya Akhtar, grew up in a Bollywood environment knowing most B-Town’s A-listers as uncle and aunty. Farhan went to school and college in Mumbai but dropped out to assist in Yash Chopra’s film Lamhe, the script for which was written by his mother. He made his directorial debut with Dil Chahta Hai (2001), a youthful film starring Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna. The film was received well, especially by youngsters and although it started off slow, it went on to become an average grosser. The film, nonetheless, won critical acclaim. The movie got most of its publicity from the youth through word of mouth. Dil Chahta Hai won the National Film Award for Best Hindi Feature Film. Akhtar also won awards like Best Director, Best Screenplay among others. Dil Chahta Hai also marked the beginning of Farhan’s career as a producer as he founded Excel Entertainment Pvt Ltd with Riteish Sidhwani.Later that year, both Farhan and his sister Zoya assisted their dad Javed in writing the lyrics for Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan. In 2001, Farhan directed Hrithik-Roshan starrer Lakshya, a film about an aimless youngster, who finds a purpose (Lakshya) and eventually himself by enrolling with the army fighting at the border. The film, however, failed at the box office and got mixed reviews. Parul Gupta of Times of India gave it a negative review saying, “It’s hard to reconcile to such triviality when it comes from Farhan Akhtar, considered the ultimate symbol of cool in Hindi filmdom.”Manish Gajjar of BBC however, wrote, “Young Farhan Akhtar, proves yet again that he is one of the finest directors Bollywood has to date. He has paid full attention to the script and the technical aspects, giving rise to a polished product.”In the same year, like Lagaan, Farhan and Zoya wrote the English lyrics for another film, Gurinder Chadha’s Bride and Prejudice. In 2006, Farhan Akhtar made the daring move of recreating the 1978 hit film Don, with Shah Rukh Khan stepping into the shoes of Amitabh Bachchan. However, the film had a twist and did rather well at the box office; it marked his first big success at the BO. It earned about Rs. 1.04 billion worldwide. However, the film failed to impress the critics. Mayank Shekhar of Mumbai Mirror wrote, “As adequate and astounding an echo it may be, Akhtar’s film can at best hope to share its space, a rack or two lower in history, to an original voice. Let this be an ample aberration, and not a norm. We usually pay to watch films we haven’t seen.”Critic Taran Adarsh said, that Akhtar had “climbed the ladder as far as craftsmanship is concerned [every frame is well decorated and makes a spellbinding impact] but despite a readymade classic at his disposal, the storyteller just doesn’t get it right this time.”In 2007, Farhan’s company Excel Entertainment produced Reema Kagti’s Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd which was declared an average hit.2008 was when Farhan Akhtar made his debut as an actor as well a singer in the film Rock On!! directed by Abhishek Kapoor. The film is about an erstwhile band formed by friends, which broke up essentially because of ego hassles. While Farhan played the lead vocalist, the film also starred Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli and Luke Kenny. The songs were all sung by him and the film was critically acclaimed too. Gaurav Malani of The Economic Times wrote that the film seemed to be “clearly designed by Farhan Akhar as his own acting debut and he doesn’t let himself down. Lending voice to all his songs helps him to get into his character with effortless ease. One could certainly overlook the lisp in his dialogue delivery.” Also, some preferred Arjun Rampal’s supporting performance over Farhan’s main lead location. The film won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. But was an average grosser at the box office.Farhan then starred in his twin sister Zoya’s directorial debut Luck, By Chance (2009) along with Konkona Sen Sharma and Hrithik Roshan. While film bombed at the box office, Akhtar’s performance received critical acclaim. Khalid Mohammed of Hindustan Times wrote, “After Rock On!!, Farhan Akhtar is an actor you look forward to. And he??s unpretentious and a likeable natural once again.”Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN wrote, “Farhan Akhtar delivers a simple-enough likeable performance that is just what the film required ?? no showy flourishes, no loud outbursts, just a straight off spontaneous act that works like a dream.”Farhan Akhtar had also acted in a project titled The Fakir of Venice, which was initially scheduled to release before Rock on!! and was supposed to be his acting debut but was eventually released in mid-2009. It was written and directed by Anand Surapur. Akhtar accepted the film after he described its script as “very powerful”, while emphasising that it “touches upon weaknesses and confusions in all human beings.” It premiered at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and the Venice Film Festival at the ArcLight Hollywood as well.Farhan’s next performance was once again lauded in the critically acclaimed thriller Karthik Calling Karthik (2010), which saw the actor playing a split personality with great prowess. CNN-IBN’s film critic Rajeev Masand gave the film 2 out of 5 possible stars, while Late Nikhat Kazmi of Times of India awarded it 3.5 out of 5, calling it “immensely watchable, purely for the class act by Farhan Akhtar in the title role”. However, the film failed miserably at the box office and was declared a below average grosser.Farhan Akhtar then starred in sister Zoya’s hit Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), where he played a copy writer, along with Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol. Farhan also wrote the dialogues for the film and his performance was lauded by the critics. Mayank Shekhar of Hindustan Times wrote, “Farhan’s character is the repository of those subtle, self-mocking repartees in this film. They should equally survive the test of time. In fact, judging by his outstandingly timed performance, it’d be fair to suggest the actor, who’s since proven himself as rock-star, dancer, stand-up comedian, TV show host (possibly the most multi-faceted Indian talent — film-wise, or otherwise) should have played hero in his first film as director-producer as well.Farhan also won awards like the Best Supporting Actor and Best Dialogue for the film. The same year, Farhan wrote, produced and directed Don 2, a sequel to his 2006 Don and once again wielded the megaphone after a gap of five years. The film was a major success in India and went on to become the year’s highest-grossing Bollywood production abroad with a worldwide gross of 210 crore, although it received mixed reviews from critics. While the film was for its action, direction and cinematography with Shah Rulh Khan receiving accolades for his performance, it was criticised for its pace and music.Following Don 2, Akhtar signed up for the biopic on athlete Milkha Singh called Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. For his role, the actor had to undergo training at the gym and study the character of Milkha Singh. Farhan has conducted extensive research over the body language of the Flying Sikh. Farhan had to prepare his looks to depict a 17-year-old army recruit and endure an on-the-spot preparation at an army cantonment.Farhan is not just a multi-talented star but also a versatile actor and probably has a lot more work to contribute to the film industry.Other venturesFarhan Akhtar was the judge on the first season of the dance-reality show, Nach Baliye (2005) and hosted a TV show on NDTV Imagine, called Oye! It’s Friday! in the same year.He has also launched a social campaign called MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination) that aims to raise social awareness against rape and discrimination against women. He also endorses several other brands.FACT FILE:Parents: Javed Akhtar (now married to Shabana Azmi) and Honey IraniSibling: Zoya Akhtar (twin)Spouse: Adhuna BhabaniChildren: Daughters Shakya and AkiraQuote RoomOn the biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”It was definitely a challenge, but it was a challenge that was a very exciting one to accept. I really had to push my limits as an actor because this character is so different from who I am in real life. I am very confident about its success.”On item numbers in films”I do believe that films do have an influence. More than the item songs phenomenon, it is in the way our heroes romance our women. I think that’s a very crucial thing and it has changed over the years.”On sequels”I am wary of sequels having to be made. With Don 2 I could finally make an action thriller the way I wanted to. Good story, classic action and simple plot which has one goal and work towards it effectively and dramatically.??Athlete Milkha Singh says that he found it emotionally overwhelming to watch his childhood and life unfold on the big screen in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.Milkha watched the biopic on his life during its premiere in London. The film is directed by Raykesh Omprakash Mehra and stars Farhan Akhtar as the legendary athlete. “I saw the film in London three days back… I cried in the second half and it was Farhan who handed over his handkerchief to me to wipe my tears,” Milkha said. “Today I am a happy man,” he added.Farhan Akhtar’s recent role as Milkha Singh in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s biopic, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, is earning him accolades from the industry and fans alike. In past interviews, the actor said that he did the film as he wanted to tell Singh’s inspirational story to the world. And looks like he is certainly keeping that promise. Farhan is now launching a line of notebooks with his Milkha Singh image on the cover at his alma mater. Farhan volunteered to get permission for the launch at his school, the Maneckji Cooper Education Trust School in Juhu, from the current principal Kashmira Gundevia. He sought authorisation to launch the books on the school’s premises, which Gundevia readily agreed upon. “The entire school has started preparations to welcome their famous alumnus and be introduced to a character they have loved so much,” says an insider from the production house. The actor got nostalgic when he met Gundevia, who had also taught him, and a few other teachers, all of whom are also confirmed to be part of the event on Friday, July 19. At the launch, Farhan will be accompanied by Mehra and the cast, including Sonam Kapoor. “When the makers decided to have the event, Farhan was keen to hold it at his own school as he was excited to relive the moments he’s spent there,” says the spokesperson of the film.Bollywood actor Vidya Balan, who is paired opposite director-actor Farhan Akhtar in the movie Shaadi Ke Side Effects, lauded the actor’s performance in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. “I have just seen the movie and he has done a fabulous job as Milkha Singh,” Vidya said at a recent event in Mumbai. Directed by Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra, the biopic based on legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh’s life has managed an impressive Rs 8.5 crore business on its opening day. Vidya Balan’s forthcoming movie Shaadi Ke Side Effects is a sequel to the 2006 hit film Pyaar Ke Side Effects.Actor Vidya Balan, who is paired opposite director-actor Farhan Akhtar in the movie Shaadi Ke Side Effects, lauded the actor’s performance in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.“I have just seen the movie and he has done a fabulous job as Milkha Singh,”said Balan on the sidelines of the launch of artist Sohini Mukhopadhyay’s first solo Rabindra sangeet album.Directed by Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra, the biopic based on legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh’s life that released Friday managed an impressive Rs. 8.5 crore business on its opening day.Bhaag Milkha Bhaag also stars Sonam Kapoor, who is still riding high on the success of her last release Raanjhanaa.Balan’s forthcoming movie Shaadi Ke Side Effects is a sequel to the 2006 hit film Pyaar Ke Side Effects.Farhan Akhtar along with his co-stars was recently seen promoting their upcoming flick, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, on the sets of Indian Idol Junior, in Mumbai. The biopic, which is based on the life of former Olympian and Indian athlete, Milkha Singh, has Akhtar in the lead. The director of the movie, Rakesh Omprakash Mehra, said that the film is about the spirit of a human being.”This film is not based on an athlete. This film is about the spirit of a human being, passion, which strengthen us to not to run from the difficulties in life, but to run with them and conquer them,” the filmmaker said.Filmmaker-actor Farhan Akhtar now seems to have turned social activist. To spread the word about his initiative, MARD: Men Against Rape and Discrimination, he has tied up with the on-going T20 tournament.“On April 26, he will distribute 70,000 fake moustaches among those present at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The match between Shah Rukh Khan’s team (Kolkata Knight Riders) and Preity Zinta’s team (Kings XI Punjab) will take place there,” says a source, adding, “During the match, everyone, including Shah Rukh and Preity, will wear the moustaches, which is the symbol of the initiative. Since Eden Gardens is one of the biggest stadiums in the country, Farhan is hoping to reach out to more people.” Disturbed by the assault and murder of an Excel Entertainment (Farhan’s production house) employee in Mumbai in August 2012, Farhan conceived the idea of MARD. He officially launched it in March this year, using social media as the primary platform. Since then, he has been using Twitter and Facebook regularly to create buzz online for the same. According to an insider, this will be the first on-ground awareness-building activity for the initiative. “Farhan has taken it upon himself to spread awareness about gender equality. He has been urging people to adopt the message,” says a source. When contacted, Farhan’s spokesperson confirmed the news. However, the actor remained unavailable for a comment.A couple of days back, HT reported that Farhan Akhtar’s ex-assistant Nitya Mehra has directed Anil Kapoor in a few episodes of his upcoming TV show, 24. And now, we have come to know that Nitya has been signed by Farhan and Ritesh Sidhwani’s production company, Excel Entertainment, to direct a full-fledged venture. If things go well, the film will kick off by the end of 2013.“At the moment, things are under wraps, but as things stand today, it’s confirmed that Excel has got three directors on board to direct one film each for the company. And one of them is Nitya (others being Zoya Akhtar and Parzania (2007) director Rahul Dholakia),” says an insider, adding, “All the three films are supposed to start soon. Nitya has already had several discussions with Farhan and Ritesh about her film, which will be a youth-centric venture with an edge.”Nitya has also been a former assistant director (AD) to filmmakers like Ang Lee (on Life Of Pi; 2012) and Mira Nair (on The Reluctant Fundamentalist; 2012). She has also worked as an AD on Bollywood films such as Lakshya (2004), Don (2006) and The Namesake (2006) too. Last year, it was reported that producer-director Goldie Behl was set to launch Nitya with a youth-centric film. But nothing has come of that announcement yet. Farhan and Nitya couldn’t be reached for a comment.Farhan Akhtar has tied up with IPL to promote MARD, a cause close to his heart. Farhan plans to distribute 70, 000 mustaches in one of the biggest matches between Shah Rukh Khan’s team Kolkatta Knight Riders and Priety Zinta’s Kings 11 Punjab at Eden Gardens. Everyone in the huge stadium would be sporting a mustache in support to the cause, MARD. This would be first time when awareness of MARD campaign would be taken to an on ground activity at such a huge scale. Farhan has vowed to spread awareness about gender inequality and rape through social media via his initiated MARD, which stands for Men Against Rape and Discrimination. Farhan has been urging his twitter and Facebook followers to adopt the message and become its ambassadors. He tweeted saying “It can only spread as a pyramid effect through you”. Akhtar conceived MARD after an incident in August 2012, when Pallavi Purkayastha, a Mumbai lawyer was sexually assaulted and then killed by her home watchman. Akhtar launched his campaign in March 2013. Later that same month, Akhtar performed at a college concert in Bangalore wearing a t-shirt with MARD’s logo. He also attempted to popularize this campaign using social networking sites. The tweets posted by Akhtar were hugely popular. In an interview, Akhtar stated that he wanted to bring the campaign to education institutions, such as schools and colleges, “to drive home the message that women need to be respected.”An increasing number of women are moving behind the camera in India. The latest one is Nitya Mehra. The former assistant director (AD) to names like Farhan Akhtar, Ang Lee (on Life Of Pi; 2012) and Mira Nair, she has now directed around five episodes of Anil Kapoor’s TV series, 24. This is the Indian adaptation of the hit American drama. “Nitya has directed a few episodes for us. Everything was done under the supervision of Abhinay sir (Deo; the director of the series). It was a big thing for Nitya to direct an actor of Anil sir’s stature. But she didn’t show any nervousness. She impressed everyone with her vision and control,” says an insider from the unit. In the past, Nitya has worked as an AD on films such as Lakshya (2004), Don (2006) and The Namesake (2006), among others.”Abhinay and Anil sir trusted her for the episodes because they knew she could do justice to them. And they were not disappointed with the results. Kapoor, especially, is impressed,” adds the unit member.Last year, it was reported that producer-director Goldie Behl was set to launch Nitya with a youth-centric film. Now, the buzz is rife that Excel Entertainment (co-owned by Farhan) might give Nitya her maiden directorial film project. Despite repeated attempts, Kapoor couldn’t be reached for a comment.Filmmakers usually look for exciting stories to bring to the big screen, zeroing in on real-life incidents and heroes for inspiration. However, actor-director Farhan Akhtar seems to be looking inward instead. For his upcoming production, Fukrey, the writers have taken inspiration from Farhan’s life, before the latter found his footing as a filmmaker. “Fukrey is a slang word for a person who does nothing. Farhan can identify very closely with the term as he was one all through his college life,” says a source. “Even after he graduated from college, he did nothing for quite a while. His mother, Honey Irani, was worried about his future as he didn’t show the slightest indication to do anything or follow a specific career path. At one point, she even warned him and told him to get serious.” Farhan admits, “I was a complete fukra for about two years after I finished college. All I did was lounge at home, watch all kinds of movies and go out with friends.” Then one fine day, inspiration struck and Farhan began working on Dil Chahta Hai (2001). The rest, as they say, is history. Now Farhan, along with co-producer Ritesh Sidhwani, is producing Fukrey, a film about being a laggard, under their banner Excel Entertainment. The trailer of the movie, which stars Pulkit Samrat, Manjot Singh, Ali Fazal, Richa Chadda and south actor Priya Anand, was recently released.India’s fastest runner, the legendary Milkha Singh, is running very fast again, this time at the box office. The biopic on his life Bhaag Milkha Bhaag has got a good response and the sprinter is bowled over by Farhan Akhtar’s depiction of him in the movie. “He is exactly how I wanted to see myself on screen. Full credit to (director) Rakeysh Mehra for seeing me in Farhan. Many actors, including Akshay Kumar, wanted to play Milkha Singh. But Farhan has done ‘kamaal’. He has replicated me on screen. He even resembles me. The body language and discipline that Farhan adopted to play me… yeh koi maamooli baat nahin hai (it was not easy).”The simple-hearted athlete cannot hide his glee at the turn of events.“My phone has not stopped ringing ever since the film released. I am getting hundreds of calls from all over the world. I am on the phone all day receiving congratulatory calls. ‘Badhaai pe badhaai aaye jaa rahi hai’,” Singh said. He says his entire life story is not represented in the film. “If they had taken all the incidents from my life the film would have been at least 10 hours long,” he said. Are you a homebuyer who has paid more than R1 lakh to your builder for ‘external development charge (EDC)?’ If yes, then you could be among thousands of homebuyers in the Greater Faridabad area, who have paid more than what they were supposed to… And this ‘extraction’ could total a whopping R1600 crore. In what could turn out to be the biggest case of cheating of the vulnerable middle-class homebuyer, some alert consumers have discovered that they could have been forced to pay extra money to their builders – anything between R1 lakh and a whopping R5lakh – for EDC, which is levied on the builders by the government for connecting their projects to sewage, water supply systems – anything which is considered to be ‘external development’.“When a satellite township is launched, development work such as water supply, sewerage, drains etc are undertaken. So state governments, while issuing licences to developers to start group housing projects, decide on an amount to be charged from the developers as EDC. The developers in turn pass this extra cost to homebuyers – and in most cases overcharge them, and ensure huge profit margins for themselves,” says Umesh Prabhakar, general secretary of the Greater Faridabad Welfare Association (GFWA).Calculating the EDC of a particular project is complicated, says Prabhakar. While the government charges EDC on an acre, some developers break it into smaller units, ie, per square foot, adding extra costs as they like. For instance, in 1994, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), had fixed R30.45 lakh per acre EDC for Faridabad, subject to an increase of 10% per annum on compoundable basis. This meant costs had gone up by Rs.104.44 lakh per acre in 2007.“So, a developer, who had applied for a licence in 2007, was supposed to pay R104.44 lakh for each acre of land to the government in that year. If we convert this amount on a per-square-foot basis, it comes to R137. The developers, however, charged between R150 and R160 per sq ft from homebuyers. We discovered these ‘manipulations’ one-and-a-half years ago and now have reasons to believe that the builders have made profits of hundreds of crores,” says Narendra Chabra, president of GFWA. What aggravated the problems of the homebuyers was the EDC hike by HUDA in 2011. Not only that, these steeply hiked rates were made effective from 2006. “This complicated EDC calculation and gave more opportunities to the developers to get money out of the homebuyers. Thankfully, just last month, the Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed the implementation of the new notification of the increased EDC. However, by that time the homebuyers had already paid a huge amount to the developers,” says Ashish Kaul, an interior designer who has invested in one of the group housing projects. When the case was being heard, the homebuyers had apprised the director general, town and country planning (DGTCP), Haryana, of the matter. An audit committee, set up by him to investigate the issue, had said in its report that no uniform method was being adopted by the developers to fix EDC rates.“There is no provision/ standard formula in the rules regarding charging of EDC from the buyers and no uniform policy has so far been framed by the government, due to which the colonisers are adopting different methods of calculation of the rates of EDC by loading total payment on account of EDC, interest etc,” the report states. “Therefore, if agreed, a uniform policy for the whole state may kindly be framed after obtaining the opinion of the association of colonisers and buyers to make the matter more transparent and justified,” the report adds.Nothing has been done yet. “What can we expect from the government? Today, developers collect money for EDC but don’t deposit it with the government and the latter is unable to do anything about it. How can we expect help from the government? Now wewant to take this matter to the court,” says Kaul. When contacted on the issue, a senior DGTCP official said on condition of anonymity that the director general was likely to take up the matter with the developers in the area at a meeting next month.Faridkot district will bring more area under basmati as compared to last year. The agriculture department expects the area to be brought under basmati to be 8,000 hectares as compared to the 3,000 hectares last year.Due to the low rates the year before last, the area under basmati had fallen by about 1,200 hectares last year. But owing to the encouraging rates last year, more farmers have opted for basmati this year. Another reason behind the increase in the area under basmati is the drought-like situation last year following which the farmers had to spend a lot on fuel to save paddy by running generators.”The area under basmati is likely to increase this year by at least 20 to 25%. Basmati and cotton are the only two crops in the Malwa region which can be suitable alternatives to paddy. The area under cotton is nearly the same as the farmers are more inclined to basmati,” said Atma Singh Sidhu, marketing officer, agriculture department, Faridkot. “Besides, the government is also planning to increase the area under basmati and there is possibility of getting a good price this year,” he added.Bhola Singh, a farmer from Bir Sikhan Wala village, has also opted for basmati on two acres as he thinks basmati to be a better option than paddy. “Paddy has a fixed income as it has a support price, so is the per acre yield with small variation, but basmati has chances of more income as it is procured privately,” he said.He has sown basmati on the area which was under cotton last year owing to the problem of plucking and the weeds which began to grow in the cotton fields after two crops.Rupinder Singh, a farmer from Bargari village, has a different view. “The area under basmati in and around our village has decreased due to many reasons. First, basmati does not have a fixed MSP and there is a lot of variation in rates. One year, the area under basmati increases, but due to more supply, the rates come down and the farmers decrease the area under it the next year,” he said.”Basmati is also a commercial crop and it may have to be stored at home to get good prices, but most of the farmers unload the produce immediately after they harvest it. The farmers have also failed to maintain quality. They blindly apply fertilisers and insecticides and the poor quality fetches low rates,” said Rupinder, who has been sowing basmati for 12 years.According to him, the assured market for basmati at the MSP can be helpful to increase the area under it.Sukhwant Singh Sran, chief agriculture officer, said, “We expect the area under basmati to be increased this year owing to satisfactory rates. So we have increased our expected area by 5,000 hectares this year. So far, basmati, by direct sowing and manually, has been transplanted on about 800 hectares.”A day after a Moga youth allegedly committed suicide in the central jail, Faridkot, his relatives and acquaintances held a protest dharna in front of city police station-2 here on Wednesday and accused the prison authorities of foul play. Deepak Kumar had allegedly committed suicide in the jail on Tuesday. He was arrested by the Moga police two week back for abetment of suicide after his wife Suman killed ended her life at Sadha Wali Basti, Moga, on June 15.Besides Deepak, his mother and sister were also named in the case. After his arrest in Moga, Deepak was sent to the Faridkot central jail. Though a judicial inquiry is already underway in the suicide case, the protesters alleged that Deepak died due to his alleged torture in the jail. They declined to accept his body and demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident. The protesters also demanded that the inquiry be handed over to an officer outside Moga and Faridkot districts.Deepak’s suicide in Faridkot central jail was the sixth such incident in the past four months. Besides increased number of suicides, the death of inmates in Faridkot central jail is also a big challenge for the police and jail authorities.Following the death of a prisoner on April 20, the Faridkot central jail had witnessed massive protest by the prisoners. The jail authorities claimed that after he was shifted to the Faridkot prison, Deepak Kumar was in a pensive mood. The jail authorities refuted the allegations levelled by Deepak’s family. After 23 years of legal battle, at last the daughters of the erstwhile Maharaja of Faridkot, Sir Harinder Singh Brar, will inherit his huge property, as the court ruled that the will entitling a trust as its caretaker was forged.Chief judicial magistrate Rajnish Kumar Sharma on Thursday pronounced the order based on a petition from Amrit Kaur, eldest daughter of Sir Brar, challenging the will. The ruling declaring the will “forged and fabricated” brings Amrit Kaur and her sister, Deepinder Kaur, the estate and assets worth Rs. 20,000 crore by the Hindu Succession Act.The court declared that the will forged on June 1, 1982, was “illegal and void”, and with the order, the trust had also become “illegal”. Of the Maharaja’s three daughters, Amrit Kaur settled in Sector 10, Chandigarh; Deepinder Kaur moved to Kolkata, and Maheepinder Kaur died some years ago in Shimla under mysterious circumstances. In 1981, when the will was forged, the ruler was in depression because of the death of Tikka Harmohinder Singh Brar, his only son. On June 1, 1982, his servants, in connivance with some unscrupulous people and lawyers, executed the will, and the family, including the maharaja’s wife and mother (alive then), remained in the dark.Executed after about eight months of Tikka’s death, the will raised Meharwal Khewaji Trust and made all the maharaja’s servants and lawyers, besides some other people, trustees. The younger daughter, Deepinder Kaur, was appointed trust chairman on meagre salary of Rs. 1,200 a month; and Maheepinder Kaur was appointed vice-chairman and given a pay of Rs. 1,000 a month. The document divested Amrit Kaur of all powers of heiress, stating that she had married against the maharaja’s wishes. The will came to light in 1989 after the erstwhile ruler’s death. In 1992, Amrit Kaur filed a suit that her father had never made any will and she had remained with him till his death. Will’s secretWhen the will was forged, Raja Harinder Singh was in depression because of the death of his son. The will could only have been created under influence and pressureThe suspicion arose, as the maharaja excluded his wife, Narinder Kaur, and mother, Mohinder Kaur, also; and appointed all employees, irrespective of class and designation, trustees.A 28-year-old farmer from Muktsar district of Punjab killed his wife and mother-in-law yesterday by throwing both of them in canal for having strained relations with his wife. When the farmers in the adjoining fields came to know about it they rushed to the spot and pulled both the bodies out, police said here today. The villagers also nabbed the farmer, Amrik Singh. After thrashing him, they informed the police and handed him over to them.Bodies were sent for post-mortem, police added. Police investigation reveals that couple, married for about 4-5 years, had a three-year-old daughter. Due to strained relations, Amrik took this step. According to SSP, Gurmeet Singh Randhawa, police registered a case under section 302 IPC against the accused .A farmer of Dhurkot village in the district was allegedly robbed of R3.55 lakh soon after he withdrew the amount from Punjab National Bank at Jubli Chowk at Faridkot on Saturday. Sources said as the victim, Balbir Singh, came out of the bank with the money, somebody called him from behind and asked him that his ‘kurta’ had got dirty. “As he turned around to look at his ‘kurta’, unidentified people snatched the bag containing the money and fled the spot. A girl was also allegedly involved in the crime,” sources added. The police authorities, on other hand, deny any snatching incident.”The old man had withdrawn money from the bank, but he had placed the bag on something outside a furniture shop, about 100 metre from the bank, and began to wash his dirty clothes when someone made off with the bag,” Gurmeet Singh Randhawa, senior superintendent of police, Faridkot, said.”The police have registered a case of theft against unidentified people and we are investigating all the aspects of the case,” he added. It is learnt that the victim was accompanied by his 17-year-old grandson and he had reportedly not handed over the bag to the boy. The area where the incident took place is a busy and crowded place and branches of some other banks are also located there.Farmers of Nangla village in the district have managed to move away from the tag of a dependent rain-fed agriculture region to an irrigated region, thanks to the laying of the Underground Pipeline System (UGPS). Large agricultural areas of Nangla, 15 km from Talwandi Sabo, was just desert before the introduction of the centrally-sponsored Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) scheme. Most farmers have small land holdings are poor and it was impossible to grow crops due to a large quantity of alkali salts coming forth on the alkali surface. Punjab soil and water conservation, department chief Mohinderpal Singh said that the scheme was implemented in the state in 2010-11.”An extensive 8-km RCC underground pipeline of 700 mm diameter was laid to ferry 3.72 cusecs of canal water for irrigating the fields of farmers of Nangla village from the Mirjeana Minor.” “The total cost of the project was Rs. 1.36 crore, of which Rs. 1.22 crore (90 per cent) was provided as subsidy from RKVY. The rest of the 10 per cent was contributed by the poor farmers as labour in the form of laying the pipeline.”He added that after the execution of the project, 1,222 acres received assured irrigated water and regular crops could be grown there .The project benefited 568 farmers, including 30 SC beneficiaries. He said that after implementation of the project, the yield of wheat doubled from 10 quintals to 20 quintals per acre. Farmers could also diversify into cotton, fodder and vegetables. He also claimed that land prices had gone up and farmers were also able to shift to supplementary dairy items like dairying. “The UGPS has not only helped in saving of farm land under katcha channels but also saved labour and diesel costs. It is a model village and its success can easily be replicated to other villages,” said Singh.Given their conflicting roles, administration authorities and protestors are at odds most of the times. But Tuesday’s demonstration in front of the LDA office in Gomti Nagar by so-called farmers’ leaders saw an unusual understanding between the two.Demanding enhanced compensation for their land acquired by the LDA for its Sitapur road and Aliganj housing schemes, dozens of farmers, in tractors and trolleys laid siege to the development authority’s office around 11am. Even in the presence of heavy police ‘bandobast’, they belligerently parked their vehicles in between the two LDA gates, blocking access to the office building.A senior LDA official, who had to attend a government meeting, was prevented to leave in his office vehicle as the protestors blocked the entrance. The official anxiously looked towards the police sub-inspector standing by with his contingent in the vicinity soliciting his intervention. “I cannot help. We have clear orders not to use force,” came the curt reply from the S-I.Efforts by LDA vice-chairman AP Tiwari to contact district magistrate Anurag Yadav proved futile. The stalemate would have continued, but for some media persons who promptly sent messages to the DM saying the situation could take a turn for the worse. The trick worked as within minutes and the protestors relented.Hundreds of allottees in the LDA’s group housing schemes on Sitapur road have been left in the lurch because of the farmers’ agitation.LDA officials say the agitation has been hijacked but a couple of land mafias, who enjoy political patronage and are exploiting the poor farmers. The allegation finds an echo in Bharatiya Kisan Union (Awadh) leader Rajendra Yadav too. “We had met the chief minister on January 25 and he had assured us of all help following which we had called off our stir, but some vested interests are now trying to exploit the situation,” he told Hindustan Times.Activists of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan) and labourers staged a protest outside the power grids at the sub-divisional level across the state under a call of the joint forum of 17 unions of farmers and labourers on Tuesday. BKU (Ekta-Ugrahan group) general secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokri Kalan, during a protest at the power grid at Ajitwal sub-division, said, “We had held meetings with deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) chairman KD Chaudhary and both had assured us of regular power supply for eight hours for agriculture sector and 24 hours for the domestic sector, but they had failed to meet the promise.” He claimed that at present, farmers were getting power supply only for four to six hours and that too was interrupted frequently. As far as domestic sector was concerned, people were reeling under scheduled and unscheduled power cuts, he added.Kokri Kalan charged chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and Sukhbir Singh Badal with pursuing policies that were “driving farmers to suicide”. “The state government is playing into the hands of capitalists and is indifferent to the plight of farmers, especially in view of the rising cost of inputs, such as fertilizers, and the declining price of farm produce,” he added. He alleged that the Powercom officials were harassing the farmers at the behest of the state government. “The power bodies provide electricity only for four hours a day. Besides, submersible motors are not able to give sufficient water due to lesser voltage,” said Kokri Kalan. The BKU demanded that the state government buy more from the central pool or from other states to provide sufficient power to farmers and the domestic sector. Kokri Kalan said the farmers protested at 24 places across the state – at 12 SDO offices and 12 executive engineers’ offices.Terming as “unfortunate” the spat between Shahrukh Khan and Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) officials, Union minister Farooq Abdullah on Friday advised the Bollywood superstar to be a “little more calmer”.”He carries a lot of weight on his shoulders. His behaviour matters to the industry tremendously, and to every young and old in India. Whatever happened, its unfortunate,” he told reporters outside the Parliament.Abdullah said Khan should be “little more calmer”.”I hope that his temper will calm down. As far as BCCI action or the Wankhede Stadium is concerned, I think they should sit down and find a middle way out,” he said.On arrest of Royal Challengers Bangalore cricketer Luke Pomersbach on charges of molestation, Abdullah said, “Action must be taken against them. So that it becomes a thing for all the world to see that India means business, and India is not going to tolerate such behaviour from anybody.”Asked whether such things bring a bad name for IPL, Abdullah said, “It gives the nation a bad name. IPL is only a small thing.”Since our last anniversary, plenty has happened in the fashion world. Some big brands finally arrived in the city, designers received high honours and some questionable decisions were taken. We sum up the headline-grabbing moments.1. Naeem Khan returnsArguably Mumbai’s biggest design export, Naeem Khan, returned home for a show 35 years after he left for the USA. His first show in India, at the city’s Lakmé Fashion Week, won him rave reviews and much applause from the packed audience.2. Ritu Kumar wins a Padma ShriThis Republic Day, the veteran designer won the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in the country. Kumar’s designs have been seen on everyone- from beauty pageant contestants to A-list actors. With almost five decades of great work to boast of, she’s among the leading bridal wear designers in the country.3. Vidya Balan’s Cannes debacleNot many expected variety when Vidya Balan announced she’d be wearing only her go-to couturier, Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s designs at the Cannes International Film Festival in May. What the actor may not have factored in was that being a jury member, her appearances would be multiple, and so would her outfits. She strutted out in creations, all of which exuded the same vibe. It was only a month later that Sabya told us in an interview, “Indians are obsessed with variety. We knew what the comments would be even before we went.”4. Tarun Tahiliani invited to the amfAR galaAnother Indian at Cannes was Tarun Tahiliani — the first designer from India to be invited to the prestigious amfAR gala. Among the likes of designers and design houses like Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Roberto Cavalli, Burberry and Gucci, he displayed two of his designs. The first — a dhoti-sari and headpiece — was worn by Karlie Kloss. “I didn’t want to go with a lehenga; I wanted it to be like clothes you can pick up and wear. This design infused Indian-ness with modernity,” Tarun told us on the eve of his departure. His other creation, a Nehru jacket with dhoti pants, was worn by Spanish model Andres Velencoso Segura.5. Christian Louboutin, Forever 21 open in MumbaiBoth brands launched in Delhi first, and hence, their Mumbai stores were highly anticipated. Forever 21 finally opened this May. Louboutin had a grand opening in March, with Amitabh Bachchan in attendance. Anushka Sharma was to attend too, but she reportedly visited Louboutin at his hotel instead.6. Models walk out of a planeLast October, Van Heusen teamed up with Jet Airways for a rather unique launch for a new range of corporate wear, X-Lifestyle. Models hit the X-shaped ramp — inside an airport hangar — straight out of a special aircraft that landed at the venue. Actor Rahul Khanna was the showstopper.7. Mannequin banIn May, a local corporator wanted skimpily clad shop mannequins to be banned because, apparently, they perpetrate sex crimes. Everyone balked at her suggestion, but the proposal was put forth anyway. We haven’t heard from her since.8. Malaika’s fashion labelThe former model claims she’s always dreamed of owning a fashion line, but it was only in April that The Closet Label finally went live. At the time of its launch, Malaika told us, “I’m more than just the face of the brand. We’re going to attempt to get everyday style that suits Indian women of all shapes, sizes and ages.”The notion of being fashionably smart is getting a makeover as Internet-linked computers get woven into formerly brainless attire such as glasses, bracelets and shoes.A wearable computing trend is at the heart of the “quantified self” movement in which people track anything from how many calories they burn to how well they sleep or their moods at any given moment.”We are heading for the wearable computing era,” Gartner analyst Van Baker told AFP. “People are going to be walking around with personal area networks on their bodies and have multiple devices that talk to each other and the Web.Understandably, the trend has found traction in fitness with devices such as the Jawbone UP, Nike’s FuelBand, and Fitbit keeping tabs on whether people are leading active, healthy lifestyles. The devices use sensors to detect micro movements and then feed information to smartphones or tablets, where applications tap into processing power to analyze data and provide feedback to users.San Francisco-based Jawbone jumped into wearable computing years ago, building electronic brains into stylish wireless earpieces and speakers for smartphones.Jawbone recently added muscle to its lineup of fitness lifestyle devices with a deal to buy BodyMedia.BodyMedia makes armbands used to track caloric burn of fat-shedding competitors on US reality television show “The Biggest Loser.”"There’s an enormous appetite for personal data and self-discovery among consumers that will only continue to grow,” said Jawbone chief executive and founder Hosain Rahman.A Forrester Research survey conducted early this year found that six percent of US adults wore a gadget to track performance in a sport, while five percent used a gadget like UP or Fitbit to track daily activity or how well they sleep.Worldwide shipments of wearable computing devices could climb as high as 30 million units this year, according to Forrester.Interest goes beyond fitness to desire for things like a gadget that recommends films based on wearers’ moods and one that replaces keys when it comes to unlocking cars or homes, the survey indicated.”It is just amazing,” said engineering professor Asim Smailagic, director of a wearable computer lab at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania. “We will see an exciting future ahead.”Smailagic began working on wearable computing at the university about 25 years ago, with projects including head worn displays that serve up technical information when needed during aircraft maintenance.’Wearable computing has to be unobtrusive’Sophisticated and inexpensive sensors for tracking movement, sound, GPS locations and more combined with “killer apps” in powerful smartphones have set the stage for wearable computing to be commonplace, according to the professor.”Contextually aware computers will be hot topics for at least the next decade,” Smailagic said. “They can help you when you need help, even to look smarter.”Everybody likes to have the kind of help contextual computing can provide.”Contextual computing goes beyond recognizing where someone is to factoring in other information such as whether it’s lunchtime or if someone has shown a preference for a nearby restaurant.”When you combine wearable computing with sensors and machine learning algorithms then you get context, the computer knows your state and is able to help out clearly in the situation,” Smailagic said.He is confident Google Glass will be a hit despite privacy worries expressed about the yet-to-be-released Internet-linked eyewear with camera capabilities. A model displays the Fitbit Flex wristband device and a smartphone and (R) Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, wearing Google Glass in San Francisco. AFP filesGoogle Glass connects to the Internet using Wi-Fi hot spots or, more typically, by being wirelessly tethered to mobile phones. Pictures or video are shared through the Google Plus social network.”Wearable computing has to be unobtrusive, fit as a natural extension of your body, and not get in the way,” Smailagic said. “Google Glass is on the right path to solve these problems.”The invention has been a hit with American tennis player Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who has been testing the special glasses as a training aid at this year’s Wimbledon. Apple chief Tim Cook last month said he sees promise in computers shrunk down and worn like watches. He predicted there will be “tons of companies playing” in the wearable computing sector but sidestepped a question as to whether Apple would be among them with the creation of a rumored “iWatch” device to be worn on the wrist.”The wrist is interesting,” Cook did allow.Pebble smart watches created by a startup that raised more than $10 million in funding at crowd-source investment website Kickstarter recently began shipping to buyers. The wearable computing craze has already spread to dogs, with startup Whistle introducing a pendant that tracks canines.Whistle devices attached to dog collars or harnesses use movement-sensing accelerometers to track activity and even how well a pet is sleeping, then relay the information wirelessly to smartphones or wi-fi hotspots. An online database built in collaboration with researchers and veterinary groups allows individual dog activity patterns to be scrutinized for hints that something may be amiss.”Traditional technology companies will have to start paying attention to how sensors are enabling us to live,” said Ben Arnold, director of industry analysis for consumer technology at NPD.”Consumers are ultimately going to become more aware of their data in the digital ether,” he said. “I suspect wearables are going to disrupt the way tech firms are doing business now.”There are cardinal elements that make or break a look. These might be a pair of studded baubles that up the style quotient or a simple sheer panel on your maxi’s hemline that makes it stand out. With this on our minds, we’ve got a fine, sexy cut-out detail covered that can punch some panache in to your look- the keyhole. From the risqué navel plunge, a delicate drawstring teardrop to a romantic cut on the back, the variations are many. What is a keyhole cut?Shaped like a keyhole (surprise!), the cut-out usually makes for a neckline style that exposes the cleavage area. While it does draw attention to your décolletage, confidence here makes all the difference. On the comfort side“Experiment without compromising on the amount of skin you show. Play demure if you like by covering up with long hair or a scarf. Comfort level is most important, as well as the innerwear you choose,” says designer Arpan Vohra. So be style wise, and unlock the trend.Vintage flairFrom the recently released film, The Great Gatsby, Old Hollywood inspired glam at the Cannes red carpet to a TV enthusiast’s staple favourite, Mad Men, fashion is going vintage with a vengeance. The keyhole reminded us of 40s’ actor Lana Turner and her white dress with a keyhole at the neck. Scour street markets and you are sure to stumble upon tops, midis and floor-grazing dresses with the drawstring drop. This science-fiction film with Jaden and Will Smith has been bumped up three rungs after its release in 59 new territories around the world. M. Night Shyamalan’s feature film has grossed $56.7 million to date.Hangover Part III has slipped down a rung to third place on the charts at $42.18 million. The Purge, on the other hand, made a fine showing last week. This dystopian horror-thriller, which has come out in only three territories including North America, now ranks fourth at $37.38 million.Misbah-ul-Haq is fighting a battle on a personal front with form though as a leader, he has etched his name in the annals of Pakistan cricket. The middle-order batsman has become one of the few Pakistan captains to beat India in India. Before him, Imran Khan and Inzamam-ul-Haq had the honour in a bilateral one-day series. No wonder, before coming to India, Misbah and his boys took a little help from Inzy on how to tackle the hosts. “We prepared well for the series under our batting consultant Inzamam-ul-Haq. The training camp back home really helped the team to perform well,” Misbah added. His run of scores hasn’t been impressive but that is not that big a concern. “The way Nasir (Jamshed) is batting, it is making our scores look ordinary. But apart from me and Azhar (Ali), our batsmen have been doing pretty well.”Unlike Inzy, his predecessor, Misbah has a bit more serious disposition. That reflected on the field. He attributed his team’s success to their bowling. Even MS Dhoni, earlier, had admitted that. While India have been struggling to find a fifth bowler, Pakistan have the luxury of good part-time spinners in Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik.”Spin has always been strong but in this series our fast bowlers have made all the difference,” he said while praising his bowlers, who pitched the ball on seam and ensured that the India batsmen were pushed into reaching out to deliveries.Preparation and the fact that they’ve had plenty of success of late has been the key. “We have done well in the past few series and that has been one of the biggest erasons of our success,” said Misbah. The 38-year-old skipper said the visitors will settle for nothing less than a winThe first four of 12 satellites in a new constellation to provide affordable, high-speed Internet to people in nearly 180 “under-connected” countries were blasted into Space on Tuesday. The orbiters, part of a project dubbed O3b, for the “other 3 billion” people with restricted Internet access, were lifted by a Russian Soyuz rocket from Kourou in French Guiana at 1927 GMT, according to a live broadcast on the website of launch company Arianespace. The project was born from the frustrations of US Internet pioneer Greg Wyler with the inadequacy of Rwanda’s telecommunications network while travelling there in 2007.He came up with a plan to bypass costly ground-based infrastructure like fibre-optics or cables by deploying a constellation of small satellites around the equator to serve as a spatial relay between users and the worldwide web using only satellite dishes.Such a system would cover a region between the latitudes of 45 degrees North and 45 degrees South — the entire African continent, most of Latin America, the Middle East, southeast Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands.”Today, a life-changing journey has begun for many of the remaining unconnected and underserved regions of the world,” O3B chairman John Dick said in a statement.”Working with our customers, O3b will open up a new and exciting world to billions of people who, up to now, have not experienced the benefits of fast Internet connectivity and who, as a result, are not on a level playing field,” he added. There are already geostationary satellites providing this type of services, but at a prohibitive cost for many end-users in this region.Existing satellites generally obit at an altitude of some 36,000 kilometres (22,000 miles) above Earth, weigh in at a hefty four to six tonnes each, and take much longer to bounce a signal back to Earth, according to a background document compiled by O3b Networks. The new satellites, built by the Franco-Italian company Thales Alenia Space, will orbit at 8,062 km and will weigh only 650 kilogrammes (1,400 pounds) each.Crucially, they will communicate with Earth four times faster, said the company, and six would be enough to assure permanent coverage.”O3b’s prices will be 30 – 50 percent less than traditional satellite services,” said the document. And it added that a country like the Democratic Republic of Congo could move from being one of the most poorly-connected on Earth to one of the best.Project investors include Internet giant Google, cable company Liberty Global, satellite operator SES, HSBC bank and the Development Bank of Southern Africa. The first four satellites had initially been scheduled to be sent into space on Monday but the launch was postponed due to bad weather. The next four satellites will be launched within weeks, according to Arianespace, and a final four “backup” orbiters early next year.To refine its coverage, the constellation could in the end have as many as 16 supplementary satellites in addition to the 12 main ones, said O3b Networks.”That’s not a toy, mate!” The very assertive directive comes from a Red Bull Racing mechanic when you try to get too close to the race-sensitive equipment that has turned the bare pitwall at the Buddh International Circuit into a high-tech communications console. And it’s only Thursday! The most potent racing cars in the world won’t take to the track until this morning, but even two days in advance, the madness has begun. For the past two years, they have been part of a community of about 40 families that joined the kibbutz and are following its own education system and ecological lifestyle. The rather substantial villa where they live, in the new section of the kibbutz, is a bit surprising. They apologize. It’s a rental. But opposite them is a house that is genuinely ecological. Their home has many areas with mattresses or mats to sprawl upon. They came here in search of the right way to raise their children.

While in most castles and palaces it is the paintings, sculptures and other royal artefacts which articulate the history of the site and the legend of the erstwhile residents, in the Alhambra that task is left to the walls, ceilings and floors. The palaces here are completely unadorned but the elaborately carved arches and the mosaics on the walls and ceilings are eloquent of their rich history. The Alhambra was not all built at one time, every ruler and every century brought additions to the city and thus it is an amalgamation of styles from different eras.

Oh, what a feeling it is to stand by the window and watch it pouring down hour after hour, with drizzles hitting your face. Now, we have to be just content with nostalgia for the monsoon. This July, Mumbai got the least rain in the last 10 years and no one knows what is in store for us next month.

This is especially the case with dictatorships and authoritarian regimes. China is in the penultimate stages of leadership transition at the highest echelons of the Chinese Communist Party, which is expected to culminate in October 2012 and its authorities are, therefore, presently at a high state of vigilance. The winds of change blowing relentlessly across the Middle East and, which have already seen the downfall of some long-entrenched regimes, provide cold comfort.

More pertinent information for the exchange rate of the rupee was also released last week by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the form of Balance of Payments (BoP) data for the first quarter of the current fiscal. The BoP registered a small surplus after two successive quarters of large deficits, indicating that after driving sharp rupee depreciation of over the second half of the previous financial year, trade and capital flows were now signalling a stable exchange rate for the rupee. The current account deficit came in lower than the previous quarter as non-oil imports shrunk on slowing growth and falling demand for gold, even as exports fell on weak global economy.

George Mathen was mad at the use of ones skills to pay off bills. During my earlier years, I had been a tattoo artist, cartoonist, muralist, and drummer. I also spent a significant portion of my life in filmmaking and animation. However, the last few years saw a deviation towards being a storyteller through comic strips. During this phase, Appupen took birth. In Malayalam, Appupen means grandfather. Since I liked to tell stories and grandfathers are usually known as great storytellers, I found it logical to call myself Appupen. However, Appupen can be evidently called George Mathens alter ego who escapes into a self-created mythical world, Halahala; although he doesnt prefer to be a part of this fictional world.

Style with Marilyn curls and you are good to go.Now playing in 63 different territories, the automotive action flick still leads the global pack of blockbusters for the third week in a row, reports Rentrak. As of Sunday, June 9, Fast & Furious 6, in its third weekend in theaters worldwide, added another $65.06 million to its global receipts, which now total $584.65 million. In second place is After Earth. However, despite the high-tech surroundings of the circuit’s pitlane, there is enough to remind you that you are in India.A large flatbed truck that looks like it should be bouncing through the potholes of a state highway crawls past mechanic

The very last beach on the border of Maharashtra and Goa was Redi, a once-pristine landscape ruined by industrialisation. As I gazed at the wasteland, I remembered that many anxious villagers had told me about the power projects that would soon be coming up in this largely unexplored land. And as the sun set on the gloomy sands of Redi, I just wished that it was just the sun setting on one beach, and not on all the other 52 beaches that form the breathtaking necklace of the Konkan.Leadership transition is a sensitive phase for all governments.
